• Will I always get the same licensed financial expert responding to my messages?

    No. We use a team-based approach, so you may interact with multiple members of our team. Our licensed financial experts will respond back to you with actionable answers and financial advice. In some cases, our Customer Support team may respond if it looks like you just need help setting up your account or understanding how Betterment works.
     
  • What types of questions can licensed financial experts help answer?

    Our experts can help you decide which funds to move to Betterment, set goals (like saving for college, a house, or retirement), and identify which Betterment tax features may be right for you. They can also help you make important investment decisions, like choosing your risk level, amount to invest, and type of account.

    If you have questions about your Betterment account (like the status of a deposit or withdrawal, how to set up a joint account, etc.), our customer service team is available 7 days a week to help.
     
  • How do I send a question to a licensed financial expert?

    You can send a message to one of our experts using either our mobile app for iPhone or Android. Tap on the message icon in the top right corner to start a conversation.
     
  • How do I get notified when I receive a new message?

    When you log into the Betterment app, the message icon in the top right corner will be blue if you have an unread message. You will also receive a push notification when you receive a new message, if you have push notifications enabled. If you receive a push notification, but do not see your unread message, close your Betterment app and restart it.
     
  • What is the benefit of your Premium plan if I can access a licensed financial expert with the Betterment mobile app?

    Our Premium plan provides customers with unlimited access to our CFP® professionals, via phone and email financial guidance with life events. They also receive unlimited access to licensed financial experts through mobile messaging.
     
    Our Digital plan provides customers with access to our Customer Support team via phone, email and chat as well as access to licensed advisors through mobile messaging.  This option does not include phone or email conversations with our licensed financial experts.

    We believe our Premium plan is helpful for people going through life events:
    • Getting married? Speak to our CFP® professionals to make sure your goals are aligned, decide how to combine your money, set financial boundaries, and decide how to allocate your money across your retirement plans.
    • Having a child? Speak to our CFP® professionals to help learn how to properly save for college, prioritize family goals, select life insurance, and discuss your estate plan.
    • Managing equity-based compensation? Speak with our CFP® professionals to better understand your plan, walk through possible tax implications, and manage the potential risks.
    • Retiring? Speak to our CFP® professionals to better plan for your transition from saving to spending, and create a tax-smart withdrawal strategy.
  • Is there an additional cost for using messaging?
